Earth Creations™ began more than three decades ago in Jamaica with something simple and familiar to me—a conch shell.
It was not an image selected from a collection or created to follow a popular trend. The inspiration came from a real shell that was part of my life, and from an appreciation for the natural world around me.
That shell became the inspiration for my first Earth Creations design. However, sometimes an idea does not disappear simply because we stop working on it. It waits.
At the time, I had the design screen-printed on white T-shirts by a neighbor in Jamaica. I could not have imagined then that decades later I would return to the idea with tools that would allow me to take Earth Creations far beyond that first design.
The Conch Shell That Started It All
Remarkably, the original shell itself has survived the years and is still in fair shape today.
There is something meaningful about being able to look at the same object that helped start this creative journey more than three decades ago and know that it is still here.
So is the idea it inspired.
Other designs included breadfruit, bougainvillea, Jamaica’s hummingbird—better known as the Doctor Bird—and other subjects from the natural world became part of those early Earth Creations designs.
They reflected things that were familiar to me and the beauty I saw in the environment around me.
Earth Creations was beginning to develop its own identity even then:
- Taking something from creation.
- Noticing what made it distinctive.
- And finding a way to interpret it through art.
Years passed. My life moved through different places, responsibilities, businesses, creative pursuits, and experiences.
Earth Creations was no longer an active project, but the creative instinct behind it never really went away.
When I decided to bring the name and concept back to life, it seemed only fitting that the conch shell should return with it. Once again, it leads the way.
The new Earth Creations Conch Shell design honors that beginning while giving the original inspiration a new setting and a new opportunity to be seen.
From One Object to an Entire Landscape
Something interesting happened as I began recreating Earth Creations. I realized I no longer saw it only as a collection of individual objects.
I saw sceneries.
Breadfruit no longer had to stand alone. It could appear alongside ackee, coconut, yellow yam, pumpkin and other Jamaican produce at a roadside table surrounded by bamboo.
Transformation will unfold as fruit becomes an abundant tropical basket, flowers bloom into bouquets and gardens, and individual trees give way to sweeping forests.
Orchards, farms, oceans, rivers, wildlife and other elements of creation could become complete scenes with stories of their own.
The possibilities became much broader than the original concept without abandoning what made Earth Creations meaningful in the first place.
Nature remained at the center.
Four Designs Begin the New Chapter
Rather than relaunching Earth Creations with only the conch shell, I wanted visitors to immediately see that this collection has range.
The initial launch therefore features four designs.
Earth Creations™ Conch Shell returns to the place where the story began, inspired by the original shell that has remained with my family all these years.
Earth Creations™ Tropical Fruit Basket celebrates the richness, color and abundance found in tropical fruits.
Earth Creations™ Jamaican Produce brings familiar Jamaican foods—including breadfruit, ackee, coconut, pumpkin, yam, plantain and more—into a lush roadside setting framed by bamboo.
In a way, it also brings one of those early Earth Creations subjects—the breadfruit—forward into a much larger scene.
Earth Creations™ Forest of Love Duo introduces another dimension of the collection.
Forest of Love originated with a poem I wrote many years ago. I will leave the poem itself to its own place and time, but the imagery and meaning behind it remained with me.
When I began envisioning this new generation of Earth Creations, I saw an opportunity to give that remembered world a visual expression.
A lion and tigress together in a bright, sunlit forest, with a river flowing nearby, became the heart of the design.
That makes Forest of Love especially significant to me. It demonstrates that Earth Creations can grow not only from objects and landscapes I have encountered, but also from words, memories and images that have lived within me.
Placed side by side, these first four designs reveal something important about the direction of Earth Creations™. It is not confined to one subject, one landscape or even one country.
It is a celebration of creation in its remarkable variety.
Inspired by Places I Know and Things I Notice
Some future Earth Creations designs will naturally reflect Jamaica, where the collection began and where so much of my appreciation for nature was formed.
Others will reflect what has caught my attention elsewhere.
A beautiful old barn along a North Carolina road can inspire me. So can an orchard, a stand of oak or pine trees, flowers growing in unexpected shapes, berries on a farm, wildlife, a river or a forest filled with sunlight.
These are ordinary things until something makes us stop and notice them.
Earth Creations gives me another way to notice.
It also gives me the freedom to create without forcing every design into the same visual formula. Some pieces may focus closely on a single subject.
Others may open into complete landscapes. Still others may begin with a memory or something I once wrote and take visual form years later.
The common thread is the beauty, diversity and abundance found throughout creation.
Returning With More Possibilities
There is another important difference between the Earth Creations of decades ago and Earth Creations today.
The original designs required a much more labor-intensive process. What I could create, reproduce and offer was limited by the tools and resources available to me at the time.
Today, those limitations have changed.
I can take an idea from memory, develop the scenery around it, refine it digitally and place the finished artwork on products without personally producing each physical item.
That opens possibilities I simply did not have when the original conch shell and other designs were screen-printed on T-shirts in Jamaica.
Yet technology is only the tool.
The ideas, memories, observations and creative direction remain personal.
Perhaps that is why returning to Earth Creations after all these years does not feel like starting something new. It feels more like continuing something that was never completely finished.
I have developed a deep conviction that nothing I have done is wasted. Something may appear irrelevant at the time, disconnected from everything else I am doing, or even belong to a chapter of life I thought had closed.
Yet I continue to see those seemingly separate pieces find their place—sometimes years or even decades later.
I stand firmly on that conviction because I see its truth being manifested in my life every day. An idea returns with new purpose. An experience becomes preparation for something I could not yet see.
Words written years ago inspire something visual today. And a conch shell that sparked a creative idea more than three decades ago becomes the starting point for an entirely new chapter.
What once appeared disconnected was not necessarily disconnected at all. Sometimes, I simply could not see the connection yet.
A Collection Designed to Keep Growing
I do not intend to release Earth Creations™ according to a rigid schedule.
That would almost contradict the spirit of the collection.
Creation itself is filled with variety, and inspiration does not always arrive according to a calendar.
New Earth Creations designs can appear naturally as ideas develop. Inspiration may come from something remembered or encountered, or simply from imagining a scene I would like to bring to life.
The conch shell may have been the seed, but it was never meant to be the boundary.
More than three decades after that first design, the original shell remains. The memories remain. And Earth Creations has returned with more possibilities than I could have envisioned when I started.
And perhaps that is one of the most meaningful parts of its story.
Some ideas are meant for a particular moment.
Others wait for us to discover what else they can become.
